The Boy and the Garfish
by Heng Li Ching
Singaporeans all know the so-called Legend of Red Hill about the clever boy who ended the plague of garfish and was executed by the raja.
However, when Heng Li Ching, who majored in South East Asian Studies in university, returned to The Malay Annals, the source of the story, she saw that Red Hill was not mentioned at all in the telling.
Her further research into academic sources and orang laut oral history revealed other key differences from the tale we have been told.
So this book retells a Singapore folktale in a new way, not just by how the story goes, but also in the way it is portrayed.
As a watercolour artist as well as a clay maker, Li Ching uses both media effectively in the illustrations. She has mixed clay into some paints and made clay objects to highlight key elements of the fable.
The result is a book that should be read to all children in Singapore and be in every library.
